Happy (not) Back to School!!!
It’s before noon on the 1st Day of School and we’re at Disneyland!!! Wait, what??? How in the heck am I at Disneyland on the 1st day of school??? Do you want the simple answer or the simpler answer???
Aerowyn started middle school and Ashlyn started 1st grade yesterday with Inspire Charter Schools. This is our 7th year of homeschooling and our 3rd year back to school with Inspire. (What???? I’m not old enough for that!!! Ok, I am… but still!)
The girls worked on their core subjects while we drove in traffic. We spend a LOT of time in the car on the daily. I’m looking into getting them travel desks for the car to make it a little easier on them as well as utilizing Audible books.
We discussed how water is distilled (thanks Indiana Jones), optical illusions (Haunted Mansion), and whether or not there are real human bones in the park (Pirates). Then they learned about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War (Great Moments). Three hours in and done and off to the dance studio for a bit more book work and 5 hours of dance. There are people who say kids shouldn’t do homeschool. There are people who have made it so homeschool families can no longer use their funds (paid with our taxes just like public schools) for “theme parks” because they “aren’t educational.” (PS… we’ve always paid for our own passes and never used funds. PPS… schools still take field trips to theme parks using the same educational tax dollars.) Life is educational… as long as you allow it to be. And there are so many educational opportunities at a “theme park” like Disney that they have their own education series and there are curriculums designed around Disney attractions. People often reject that which they do not understand or make decisions based on missing information, etc. I challenge you to always look for deeper understanding.
Oh, and that simpler answer??? It’s choice.
It’s not always easy and there are times I may be jealous of parents who get to send their kids to school and then have time to themselves… and I will continue to choose the craziness that comes with homeschooling for as long as it works for my girls and our family.
What did your “back to school” look like? Do you homeschool??? Let me know why or why not.
